Ingredients

  • 12 ounces string cheese sticks cut in half (1 package)
  • 1⅓ cups Italian breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 large eggs + 3 tablespoons water, beaten
  • 2 cups vegetable oil for frying
  • Marinara sauce for dipping (click for recipe)

Instructions

  • Set up a breading station with 3 bowls for the flour, egg mixture, and breadcrumb mixture.

  • For the breadcrumb mixture, combine the Italian breadcrumbs with the grated parmesan, salt, garlic powder, and onion powder.

  • Dredge each string cheese stick in flour, fully coating it on all sides.

  • Dip each stick in the egg mixture, letting the excess drip off.

  • Then, roll each stick in the breadcrumb mixture, fully coating it on all sides.

  • Dip each stick again in the egg mixture, and then roll again the breadcrumbs.
  • Transfer the sticks to a lined baking sheet.

  • Freeze the sticks for 20-30 minutes.
  • Heat the oil in a large Dutch oven until it reaches 325°F.

  • Drop 4-5 breaded sticks into the oil and fry for about 20 seconds until the breading is crispy and golden brown.
  • Transfer the mozzarella sticks to a plate or sheet pan lined with paper towel.
  • Serve immediately with marinara sauce.

Notes

  • Make sure the cheese is well-coated with breadcrumbs to avoid blowouts.
  • Do not skip freezing the mozzarella sticks before frying!
