These creamy garlic mushrooms are super simple to make, and I can usually get them on the table in about 20 minutes. I find they make for a great holiday appetizer or side dish that’s full of flavor. I simmer whole mushrooms in butter and garlic, then add a splash of cream, grated Parmesan, and a sprinkle of parsley, and they are done. Creamy and garlicky, this classic dish is always a hit.

Glorious Garlic Mushrooms
Is it even the festive season without creamy garlic mushrooms?! They are always on my menu during the holidays, and they’re always a favorite. This is my go-to recipe each year as it’s so simple and so delicious.
I simmer whole button mushrooms in butter, throw in fresh garlic, cream, grated Parmesan, and a sprinkle of fresh parsley. The mushrooms turn out tender, juicy, and full of flavor. It doesn’t get any easier than this. They make an ideal side dish for a busy weeknight, elevating any run-of-the-mill meal to a restaurant-quality feast. But since they are so easy to prepare and everyone loves them, I can never resist adding them to my holiday table. This recipe makes enough for my family of four, but I’ll double or triple the recipe if I am entertaining.
Tips For Beginners
- White button mushrooms are the best. I prefer using white button mushrooms; they are tender, juicy, and easy to find. I keep them whole, so they soak up all the flavor.
- For a wine-free dish. If you don’t want to use white wine in the sauce, you can use vegetable or chicken broth – I suggest you use a low-sodium variety, as the butter is salted and the Parmesan cheese also adds saltiness.
- Pat dry after washing. Give the mushrooms a quick rinse and pat dry before adding them to the pan so they don’t get soggy. Wet mushrooms will also dilute the flavor of the creamy sauce.

How to Make Creamy Garlic Mushrooms Step by Step

Heat the butter: Heat 5 tbsp of butter in a large skillet set over medium-high heat.

Brown the mushrooms: Add 1 lb. of mushrooms and stir to coat them in the butter. Cook on medium-high for 2-3 minutes, stirring often. Season with salt and pepper to taste, being mindful that the butter is salted and you’ll be adding Parmesan cheese.

Add the wine: Once the mushrooms have browned and are slightly seared, add 2 tbsp of white wine and stir to coat. Add 2 tsp garlic and 2 tbsp parsley and continue stirring/tossing as you cook, cooking until the garlic is fragrant. This usually takes me 1-2 minutes.

Add the cream and cheese: Pour in 2 tbsp of heavy cream and 1 tbsp freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Bring it all to a boil and let it simmer for 2-4 minutes or until the sauce reduces a bit. Give it a taste test and add more salt and pepper if needed.

Serve: Serve the mushrooms and enjoy!
How to Store
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Make Ahead
These creamy garlic mushrooms are best served straight away, straight out of the pan. If you are planning to serve them as part of a larger meal, I would suggest cooking them at the last minute. If your timing doesn’t work out, you can make them ahead and transfer them to an oven-proof dish and keep them in a warm oven until ready to serve.
Reheat
Reheat the mushrooms over the stove or in the microwave.
Serving Suggestions
These mushrooms are so versatile and are much more than a side dish; I like to serve them on toast for a tasty breakfast or brunch, or I’ll serve them as an appetizer with a crispy baguette to soak up all the juices. I find the mushrooms also go well with homemade Alfredo sauce and served over pasta. As a side, they are delicious alongside this juicy Denver steak or a simple fried chicken breast. This recipe comes together perfectly as a side dish for my family of four.
