Dog ice cream is the perfect summertime treat for your furry friend. I love making this homemade dog ice cream for my dog so he doesnโ€™t feel left out. I make it with dog-friendly ingredients like peanut butter, yogurt, and bacon, then I freeze it into a soft, scoopable consistency thatโ€™s easy for dogs to lick right out of their bowl. Best of all, this recipe makes a big batch so my dog can have plenty of cool treats to enjoy all summer long.

5-Star Review

โ€œI made this frozen yogurt for my dogโ€™s birthday treat, and it was a huge hit! I used goat milk yogurt and natural PB (peanuts are the only ingredient). I used slightly less peanut butter and added a little coconut oil and honey. I blended it with a hand mixer and then froze it in small jars. I sprinkled bacon on top instead of mixing it in.โ€ โ€“ Amy

A Cool Treat For Your 4 Legged Friend

This homemade dog ice cream recipe with yogurt, peanut butter, and bacon is just the thing for your favorite four-legged friend. When the hot weather hits, and I enjoy a nice, refreshing bowl of ice cream, I always feel bad for my dog. He looks on longingly, waiting for me to share. Now, I donโ€™t have to share from my bowl as Iโ€™ve made a batch just for him.

Made with all-natural, unsweetened peanut butter, plain yogurt, and bacon, itโ€™s the perfect dog-friendly treat. I mix it all together and freeze it so itโ€™s cool and refreshing, and easily scoopable, sort of like soft serve.

Can Dogs Eat Ice Cream?

Dogs should not be fed โ€œhumanโ€ ice cream, as they have different digestive systems and canโ€™t digest dairy very well. Sugar, chocolate, and too much lactose can cause problems, including gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, or vomiting.

The ingredients Iโ€™ve used in this recipe are safe for dogs to eat, but I always recommend keeping an eye on your pup after feeding them something new to see how they react.

Since this recipe has real food ingredients, itโ€™s safe for humans to eat, too. So if your kids find their way to it, or you want to taste it, all will be fine.

I recommend starting your dog off with ยผ cup at a time, and then increasing the amount for bigger dogs.

Three Simple Ingredients

  • Peanut butter:ย Go for a creamy version instead of chunky, and natural ingredients instead of processed. Make sure there is no xylitol, as itโ€™s toxic for dogs, or any sweeteners.
  • Plain yogurt:ย I recommend using Greek yogurt because it has significantly less lactose than regular yogurt and has more protein. Even lactose-free Greek yogurt will work well. Avoid sweetened yogurt, especially those with artificial sweeteners.
  • Bacon bits:ย This ingredient is optional, but your dog will love it.

Mix Ins

  • Add a splash low-sodium chicken broth for more flavor.
  • Stir in bananas or strawberries for more texture.
  • Sprinkle with crushed dog biscuits or treats.
  • Add other ingredients based on what your dog likes and what they can digest well.

Additional Ways To Serve Dog Ice Cream

Make an ice cream sandwich.ย Place a scoop of the ice cream between two roundย dog treats;ย scrape the excess off the sides, and freeze again.

Freeze in an ice cube tray. Once frozen, transfer to a freezer-safe container and pull out just what you need. This gives you easy-to-use, smaller portion sized servings.

Make pupcicles. One reader suggests washing and drying a styrofoam egg carton or an ice cube tray will also work. Spray it with Pam or coconut oil spray. Use a scoop to put the ice cream into each egg cup, and then stick a dog bone treat in for pupcicles!

How to Store

This ice cream lasts up to 8 weeks in the freezer. So make a big batch and save it, so your furry friends can enjoy this treat all summer long.

This appears to be a simple and enjoyable recipe. I think my dog will love the mix of peanut butter and yogurt, and I might try adding bacon too. Iโ€™ve also picked up some ready-made dog ice cream from Frostreats a few times. They use simple ingredients, and my pup really enjoys it. But homemade is always a nice option when thereโ€™s time. Thanks for sharing this

Unfortunately, we can’t use the ingredients that normally depress the freezing point and make ice cream softer, like sugar, because they’re not good for pups! We recommend using whole milk or full-fat yogurt and letting the ice cream sit out for about 10 minutes before serving it to help it soften up.

I make ice cream for my dogs a lot, but I use one cup Peanut butter, 3 very ripe bananas, and a large container of Plain or Vanilla Greek Yogurt. I also put them in ice cream cup I purchase online.

Hi Cindy, we used an 8-ounce container of yogurt, so a little bit bigger than the single-serve pots. It will keep well for up to 8 weeks in the freezer!

Could you use greek vanilla yogurt? My sweet old Gucci loves the peanut butter treats. Notorious hasn’t had one yet, but my hope is that he will like them, too.
