My favorite way to start any morning is with a steamy cup of Bulletproof Coffee. Bulletproof Coffee (or Butter Coffee) is a rich, creamy coffee drink filled with healthy fats. This pick-me-up is made with coffee, grass-fed butter, and MCT oil. When I need a little extra fuel in my day, you will catch me whipping up a batch.

Easy Bulletproof Coffee Base Recipe
Bulletproof Coffee is a high-fat, low-carb drink made with brewed coffee, MCT oil, and butter. Popularized by those following a ketogenic diet or practicing intermittent fasting, it was thought that this morning drink could help boost energy and potentially help with weight loss due to its silky, creamy texture, which helps with food cravings and satiety. The evidence is still mixed, but some studies show a positive effect.
The key to the creamy mouthfeel you get with bulletproof coffee is the addition of ghee or butter. The other unique ingredient that makes bulletproof coffee what it is is the MCT oil. MCT oil is intended to help you feel full and satisfied, energetic, and have a clear, focused mind.
Regardless of whether these health benefits ring true, I love the taste and quick burst of energy and clarity I get with a cup first thing in the morning.
Recipe Success Tips
- Any brewed coffee works. Though I used Bulletproof coffee as I like the added vitamins and minerals, any brewed coffee will work.
- Melt the butter. If you are using butter, it is best to melt it before adding it to the blender.
- A blender is a must. To get the frothy, creamy texture, you need to use a blender. Mixing by hand won’t work.
- Use coconut oil. If you can’t find MCT oil, coconut oil will also work. You may not get the same benefits, but the texture will be the same.
- Add mix-ins. Add protein powder, chaga mushrooms, cinnamon, vanilla, or other spices for a different taste profile.

Serving Suggestions
When I follow a low-carb or keto diet, I’ll pair my morning bulletproof coffee with steak and eggs or loaded deviled eggs with bacon. For lunch or dinner, I’ll make this fast and easy eggroll in a bowl or zucchini ravioli. If I’m feeding the kids, too, this cauliflower crust pizza is a good option.

I’ve made this many times & really like it. Forgot about it for awhile & wasn’t sure of the recipe. Now I’m back on board.
Can I substitute glee for regular butter?
Hi Kathleen, we haven’t tried that.
Hi! I know my comment is a little late hut would using cacao butter work? I am exploring all vegan options!
We have never tried that, but we think it could work!
So, did use cacao butter at one time for my bulletproof coffee and just found that it was too bitter! It’s hit or miss. You will think you have found the right one at one time and then when you go to purchase it again it’ll be totally yucky. But if you want to make this an excellent recipe, follow all the same instructions but look up choffy! This is a form of brewed chocolate that you can mix with your coffee half and half or however you choose and it will give you that rich chocolate flavor along with your ghee, your bulletproof collagen powder and your bulletproof MCT oil. I also add Ceylon cinnamon reeds do my brewing coffee and what comes out is amazing. Nothing short of amazing! If you happen to look up choffy and decide that you want to buy some, just tell Jason that William sent you!
I made exactly per the recipe except I used coconut oil instead of MCT oil because I don’t have any. Plus I used freshly made homemade butter! It’s delicious!!! No pic because it’s in a metal coffee mug. :-(
We’re so glad you enjoyed it! Those sound like great swaps!
Can I use my freshly brewed coffee? Or does it have to be the store-bought bullet proof coffee to be called a “bullet proof coffee”. Sorry for my dumb question.
There are no dumb questions!! You can absolutely use any freshly brewed coffee you like. Bulletproof coffee simply has added vitamins in some of their blends.
I love ghee coffee as one of the best morning beverages. It gives me energy, stamina, and health benefits like constipation cure, immunity boost, etc. Ghee coffee is approved in keto diet planning. I love keto ghee coffee to start my morning chores.

I’m allergic to dairy. Can I use vegan plant based butter?

Made my first bullet coffee today, was really surprised at how it tasted, it was frothy and delicious I added organ clean protein for a little creamer instead of stevia.
