A New Spin on Making Hamburgers

We are big fans of burgers at my house, and this air fryer hamburger recipe is one of my favorite ways to prepare them. Don’t get me wrong, come summer, I love a burger hot off the grill, but when outdoor grilling isn’t possible, the air fryer is the way to go. I’ve taken ground beef, added a few seasonings, and then the air fryer takes over, cooking the burgers so they are juicy, have a crispy outside, and are loaded with juicy flavor inside. Nothing beats air fryer burgers, as they cook quickly with minimal cleanup.

Perfect for my family of four, these are great for a busy weeknight, but if I’m entertaining, I’ll double or triple the recipe and cook it in batches.

Tips for Beginners

  • Preheat your air fryer. This ensures the burgers cook through evenly.
  • Don’t overwork the burger mixture. This may cause them to become tough and chewy.
  • No need to flip the burgers. The air fryer circulates the air so the burgers cook on both sides.
  • If cooking burgers from frozen. They’ll need an extra 5-10 minutes of cook time.
  • Change up the seasoning. Try our burger seasoning recipe in place of the salt, pepper, and garlic powder for even more flavor.
  • Let the burgers rest for a couple of minutes before serving. This allows the juices to redistribute so the meat stays juicy.

Becky’s Tips

  • Burger Temperature Chart
    • For rare burgers: 125-130°F
    • For medium-rare burgers: 130-140°F
    • For medium burgers: 140-150°F
    • For medium-well burgers: 150-160°F
    • For well-done burgers: 160-165°F
  • Note that the FDA officially recommends that hamburgers be cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F to ensure all bacteria are killed. If you choose to go with a medium cook, be sure you’re using the freshest beef or even making your own ground beef.

How to Make Air Fryer Hamburgers Step by Step

seasoning ground beef in a glass bowl

Get the air fryer going and prepare the ground beef: Preheat the air fryer to 375°F for 5 minutes so the meat cooks fully. Combine 1 lb. 80% ground beef, 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce, ½ tsp garlic powder, ½ tsp kosher salt, and ¼ tsp ground black pepper in a large bowl.

four uncooked burger patties on a plate

Prepare the patties: Divide the beef mixture into four patties, pressing them down until they are no thicker than ½ inch. I find this thickness cooks up in just a few minutes; any thicker will increase the cook time.

Cook the burgers: Place the burgers in the preheated air fryer basket and cook for 7 minutes until sizzling and cooked through.

Add the cheese: Place one slice of cheddar cheese on each burger and cook for an additional minute until the cheese melts. Let the burgers rest for a few minutes to allow the juices to redistribute. This helps keep them tender and juicy.

Garnish and serve: Garnish with your desired toppings and serve hot.

How to Store

Store air fryer hamburgers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days or in the freezer for up to 4 months. Separate the burgers with parchment paper to keep them from sticking. Let thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating in a 400°F air fryer for 3-4 minutes.

Serving Suggestions

This recipe makes 4 burgers, so I can easily feed my family with one batch. I’ll serve them with homemade soft hamburger buns and a side of either crispy air fryer French fries or sweet and crispy sweet potato fries. If I’m entertaining, I’ll make a double batch of burgers and prepare a few extra classic burger sides like creamy coleslaw or potato salad to flesh out the meal.

Toppings

It’s so easy to change up this hamburger recipe by adding different toppings.

These hamburgers are great. I put BBQ sauce on the top and they were absolutely delicious. Both my husband and I loved them! You should add a favorite BBQ sauce to your possible toppings.

7 minutes at 375 degrees is not hot enough, nor long enough, to cook 1/4 lb. beef patties in an air fryer. I’m not sure if the other reviewers actually followed the instructions here. For the first two patties, I used this recipe – they came out soggy and undercooked. For the final two burgers, I increased the temperature to 400 degrees and 10 minutes – flipping halfway through. They came out perfect. Would not recommend this recipe or method, including adding wet ingredients like Worcestershire to raw beef – burgers tend to come out like sausage this way. Best to stick with salt, pepper, and other dry spices, with high heat and flipping halfway through.
