Why We Love This Sour Cream and Onion Dip Recipe

Let’s be honest, you can never have enough dip recipes, and when they are this easy and delicious, it’s a no-brainer! This homemade chip dip is seriously one of the easiest recipes on The Cookie Rookie, but it makes such a great addition to any appetizer spread.

  • Easy. With just 4 everyday ingredients, this dip is super simple to make, but so addictive!
  • No Cooking. Any recipe that doesn’t require you to turn the oven on is a win in my book!
  • Crowd-Pleaser. This is a great app to serve friends and family. It’s perfect for game day!

Variations on Homemade Chip Dip

I prefer to use full-fat sour cream, cream cheese, and mayo for this dip, but you can use reduced fat if you prefer. You could also swap the sour cream for plain or Greek yogurt for a healthier option.

How to Store

This sour cream and onion dip will keep well in the fridge for around 3 days, but it’s doubtful it will last that long! Keep it covered with plastic wrap or in a sealable container to keep it fresh. It’s such a perfect make-ahead app.

It’s best not to freeze it as sour cream can become quite grainy when thawed.

Serving Suggestions

No surprise here, this homemade chip dip is perfect to serve with…. chips! Classic potato chips, crunchy tortilla chips, baked sweet potato chips, or crispy wonton chips are all great choices. It has the perfect scoopable consistency whilst not being too heavy.

It’s great with crudite too, or use it as a dip for fries or spread on to your favorite burger or sandwich.

Becky’s Tips

  • For a garlic dip, simply swap the onion powder for garlic powder.
  • Soften the cream cheese before using so it’s easy to make smooth. I like to take mine out of the fridge at least 30 minutes before I plan to make this dip.
  • Nutritional values are based on one cup of the dip.
Storage: Store sour cream and onion dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Keep refrigerated and don’t leave at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
