What are the best oats to use in baking?

Old fashioned, or rolled, oats are best to use for this baked apple oatmeal. They soften, but still have a slightly chewy texture to them. Steel-cut oats shouldn’t be used as they will be too tough to eat, quick oats can be used in a pinch, but will be much softer.

How long does baked oatmeal keep?

This baked oatmeal will keep well for up to 3 days covered in the fridge. Let it cool completely before storing.

Can you freeze baked oatmeal?

Yes! This oatmeal is freezer friendly. Cut it into squares, freeze solid on a baking sheet and transfer to a container, or, cover and freeze it in the dish it’s baked in. It will keep well for up to 3 months. Thaw it in the fridge overnight.

Ingredients 

  • 3 large eggs 150 grams
  • cups milk 341 grams, any kind that you prefer
  • 1 cup applesauce 250 grams, sweetened or unsweetened
  • ½ cup maple syrup 156 grams
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder 4 grams
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 3 grams
  • 1 teaspoon apple pie spice 3 grams
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 cups old-fashioned oats 300 grams
  • 2 apples peeled, cored, chopped into ½-inch pieces, and divided

Instructions 

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F and spray an 8×8 or 9×9-inch baking pan with nonstick spray.

  • Whisk the eggs together in a large bowl, then pour in the milk, applesauce, and maple syrup and whisk to combine.

I love all of your baked oatmeal recipes and this one was no different! I did have one question though: is there an error, or perhaps I missed something, in the ingredients/pan size? I made it as written, but when I went to pour it into my 8×8 pan it was overflowing! I ended up pouring it into a 9×13 instead and it worked great, but I wanted to make sure I didn’t make an error for next time. Thanks again for a great recipe!5 stars

Same. I just split mine into smaller dishes so they had a thickness to them.
